How to Cut Ceramic Tile and Tesserae

The fastest way to create a mosaic is to select tesserae from ready cut and prepared sheets, piles or jars.

While it can be a time consuming process, cutting the tesserae into small pieces before you begin your mosaic is actually the fastest and will make the mosaic tile laying process a lot more fun as you won't have to stop all the time to cut more pieces.

Of course any special pieces should be cut to size as and when you need them. If you have a design already printed out on your base then it is a good idea to cut the 'difficult' or 'intricate' pieces before the other regular tiles.

Tesserae can be cut using a pair of tile nippers. You must always wear eye protection and a face mask will protect you against splinters and dust that can damage your lungs. It is also a good idea to wear closed toed shoes to prevent any splinters failing from your work desk.
