Tiles and Tesserae for Making Mosaics
All the pieces used in a mosaic are called tesserae, which is derived
from the Latin word for cube and the Greek word for four.
There are many different types of mosaic tesserae, some are more versatile
and readily available than others. Most can be bought in small amounts and can
be broken into smaller pieces depending on the size you need.
Before starting any project you must make sure the tesserae are suitable for
the conditions the mosaic is going to be used in; such as sun, rain, steam,
frost, walked on, etc.
