A hammer is used to smash ceramic tiles (and some glass tiles) into irregular pieces.

Place the tiles on one side of a towel and the fold the other side of the towel over the top of the tiles. Hit the tile with the face of the hammer. Open the towel and remove any pieces you like. Be careful to check the tiles over each time you smash them as they become very small and splintery very quickly.

This tool is great if you want a mosaic that is irregular and if you are just interested to see what shapes you can make. I wouldn't recommend it for a mosaic that required straight edges and clean lines throughout.
